Why open front for long stock?
Long lengths move through the aisle, not through the frame — a closed shelf makes each the length of a drawer you drag sideways; an open arm lets a crane set a nine-metre tube in from above, which is the whole difference in access.

Cantilever racking is a column-and-arm system without a back face or solid shelves, where long, bar-, tube- or irregular-shaped stock rests on projecting arms so a crane or truck can lift it in from the open side.
The open front is the feature: with no back and no shelves, a nine-metre tube, a stack of sheet and a bundle of angle go in and out across the aisle instead of through a frame, which is what buys the visibility and access a closed shelf can never give long stock.
Arms outboard of a single spine
Every long item wants to lie along the rack, and a closed shelf would turn each one into a drawer you pull across its neighbours. Cantilever gives each stack its own arm, so a bundle of tube lifts straight onto the projecting member and sits there in clear view — the price is that the whole load rides on one upright and its moment, which is why the arm rating is the spec that matters and why the spine is a structural member, not a row of brackets.
Beds for stock that is not a bar
When the stock is sheets or parts rather than bars, the arms carry a timber or steel bed to spread the load onto the projecting member; the arm stays the same structural member and the bed adapts the open system to a shape a bare arm cannot hold. That one option is what takes cantilever from a bar rack into a general open shelf for material racks, machine shops and building-supply yards.
